In recent years rural Japanese men have begun taking foreign brides as a way of countering the reduced number of women who are of marrying and childbearing age that are willing to marry rural Japanese men. The phenomenon has created a new industry of foreign marriage brokering that uses both local governments and private organizations to facilitate the immigration of foreign brides. This is a largely a result of an aging population in Japan where approximately 20% of the population is over the age of 65, which is exceptionally high, a fertility rate of only 1.3, and increased opportunities for women and increased costs in child care.
The conditions associated with cross-nationalty and cross-racial marriages: 1) Persons who have experienced disorganized and stressful parental families are more likely to marry members of other nationalities and races than those who were raised cohesive and stable families. 2) Person living in urban areas cross nationality and racial lines to a greater extent than persons living in rural areas. 3) Persons crossing nationality lines to marry generally choose partners who are members of the same religion and of the same socio-economic level. In interracialm arriages, the spouses generally come from different religions and apparently from different socio-economic levels; one study, however, reports that the majority of spouses in interracial marriages come from the same socio-economic level. 4)In Oriental-white marriages, generally the Chinese male marries the white female and the white male marries the Japanese female. 4)Among those who undertake an interracial marriage, a greater-than-average number have been married previously. 5)American males and females marrying out of their nationality or racial group are generally older than the average at time of marriage. 6)The degree of success attained by international marriages is unknown. The evidenceis contradictory regarding the success, in terms of divorce, of mixed racial marriages: one study found that such marriages are less successful than marriages between persons of the same race.
